The railways today and tomorrow: what kind of environment?
We are on the cusp, we are told, of a technological revolution that will fundamentally change the way we spend our time, live and work. The First Industrial Revolution mechanised production using steam power. The Second Industrial Revolution used electrical energy to create mass production. The post-war Third Industrial Revolution saw the emergence of electronics and information technology. The Fourth Industrial Revolution, which is just around the corner, ushers in the digital revolution, the era of ‘data’. It is characterised by a fusion of technologies that blurs the boundaries between the physical, digital and biological spheres. These changes will entail developments the scope of which we are still unaware. They affect all sectors, and the railways will be impacted in one way or another.
