Changes in society

Society, environnement and industryChanges in society

Summary: Rail has a history of over 200 years, and many decades have passed since then. It was the dominant form of transport for almost 100 years, and has managed to hold its own despite entering the second industrial revolution, the oil revolution, a period that is no longer favourable to it. The world has progressed enormously, and a large proportion of the world’s population has sufficient income to undertake a thousand and one tasks that our ancestors could never have imagined. This has a considerable impact on transport, which has meanwhile become the biggest emitter of greenhouse gases. The recent digitalisation of our societies promises an even more interconnected world, where trains will have to demonstrate their added value in the face of competition and the information available every second.

The railways today and tomorrow: what kind of environment?

We are on the cusp, we are told, of a technological revolution that will fundamentally change the way we spend our time, live and work. The First Industrial Revolution mechanised production using steam power. The Second Industrial Revolution used electrical energy to create mass production. The post-war Third Industrial Revolution saw the emergence of electronics and information technology. The Fourth Industrial Revolution, which is just around the corner, ushers in the digital revolution, the era of ‘data’. It is characterised by a fusion of technologies that blurs the boundaries between the physical, digital and biological spheres. These changes will entail developments the scope of which we are still unaware. They affect all sectors, and the railways will be impacted in one way or another.

We can identify three main themes that make up the world to come (click on the dots to go to the corresponding pages):
