Railway operations are a team effort. Day-to-day operations and maintenance are carried out by teams who work together to ensure that the network operator can guarantee the best possible service.
A distinction must be made between:
• Routine maintenance work, which does not involve a complete rebuild;
• Partial or complete (re)construction work, such as replacing bridges or level crossings.
The boundary between these two activities is sometimes blurred, as a railway line can be maintained by means of minor civil engineering works, such as low walls to reinforce a trench or to improve rainwater drainage. In other cases, more extensive work is required, such as replacing a bridge. 🟧
