Summary: Krösatågen is a regional train network in southern Sweden, serving areas in Småland, Halland, Skåne, and Blekinge. It connects small towns and cities. The service is today run by swedish incumbent operator SJ on behalf of regional transit authorities like Jönköpings Länstrafik. It’s integrated with other transport systems, allowing for smooth ticketing and connections across the region. SJ operates Krösatågen’s regional train services using Bombardier Itino DMUs (Y31/Y32), ASEA X11 and X14 EMUs, and older Y1 railcars. To modernize the fleet, a contract was awarded to CAF in 2021 for 28 new Civity Nordic trains: 20 electric EMUs (ER3) and 8 bi-mode units (BIR1) capable of running on both electric and biodiesel power. These new trains are expected to be delivered between 2024 and 2027.

In brief

The Krösatågen services operate on behalf of regional public transport authorities in six of the seven counties served (Östergötland does not participate in procurement). Tickets follow local systems but are also available via Resplus. DSB began operating the trains in 2010, followed by Transdev in 2014, Vy Tåg in 2018, and now the incumbent operator SJ.

SJ from December 2021 under a 12-year contract. The network has expanded since its start in Jönköping–Vaggeryd, including service along key routes like Nässjö–Alvesta and Jönköping–Tranås. In 2021, the Kustpilen lines joined Krösatågen, and in 2023, a new Växjö–Kalmar line was added. Diesel units Y1 and Y31/Y32 were used, later replaced by electric units X11/X14. Starting in late 2024, 28 new red hybrid trains from CAF will replace the current fleet, including bimodal trains for non-electrified routes.

Definition of train services
It is important to clearly distinguish the nature of the services:
• Public Service Obligation (PSO) in railways ensures essential passenger services are provided even if they’re not commercially viable, typically subsidized by governments. PSO contracts are awarded to operators to serve routes for a period agreed in a contract (8, 10 or 15 years, for example). Some PSOs take over the staff of the previous operator.
• Open access, on the other hand, allows any licensed railway company to offer services on the rail network without state subsidies. This promotes only commercial services on profitable routes, leading to better service quality and pricing.

Emu CAF Civity

Ordered by Swedish regions, 28 units were leased, with an option for 26 more. The trains will undergo at least 20,000 km of testing before entering service in 2026. They feature a cranberry-inspired design for the Krösatågen network.

Background

It was in 1985 that it all began. On a warm early summer’s day in Vetlanda at the end of May, in the presence of two county governors and a large crowd of onlookers, the Krösatågen train was inaugurated by the then Minister of Transport, Curt Boström.

The name is linked to Småland. Krösa means lingonberry in the dialect.

In 1990, the Krösatågen trains changed their name to Länstågen. This was in connection with the trains starting to run all the way to Halmstad. Traffic increased. The five Krösatågen trains became around twenty Länståg. More lines were added and the trains began to operate on the main line between Nässjö-Tranås and Nässjö-Sävsjö-Stockaryd.
• In 2002, the name Krösatågen was reintroduced.
• In 2013, the network was expanded and Krösatågen now also serves Karlskrona-Emmaboda-Kalmar and Växjö-Alvesta-Hässleholm.
• In 2015, Krösatågen began operating on the Jönköping-Tranås route.
• In 2021, Kustpilen was incorporated into Krösatågen. Krösatågen thus began to serve Linköping-Västervik and Linköping-Kalmar.
• In 2023, the route network was further expanded. The Krösatågen trains now began to run between Kalmar-Växjö.

The system currently covers 7.5 million train kilometres per year and serves 80 stations. The service runs on ten lines. 🟧
