Talgo – The company

Summary: Talgo is a Spanish manufacturer of intercity, standard, and high-speed passenger trains. Its name comes from a type of train called Tren Articulado Ligero Goicoechea Oriol, which became the brand name of the company founded in 1942. Since the 1950s, Talgo has supplied its famous articulated trainsets to the historic operator Renfe, with up to seven different versions. One version, capable of automatically changing the wheel gauge (from 1,668 mm to the UIC standard 1,435 mm), was launched in the late 1960s under the name Talgo RD III. This allowed the company to demonstrate its expertise in France and abroad. Talgo has since exported a wide range of its articulated trainsets. The company entered the high-speed train market in 2004 with the Talgo 350 trainsets, classified as S102 by Renfe, although the power cars were built by Bombardier. Today, the firm is offering its latest product currently undergoing certification in Europe: the Talgo AVRIL.
