Summary

PKP Intercity is separated company of PKP since 2001, receiving a 50‑year passenger licence on 30 August and launching operations on 1 September. It took over qualified long‑distance services used by 10 million passengers the previous year and employed 1,500 staff. In 2005 the company acquired a majority stake in Wars. On 2 January 2008 it became a joint‑stock company, and in December 2008 it absorbed interregional fast services from Przewozy Regionalne, along with part of its rolling stock and over 4,000 employees, plus 1,850 from PKP Cargo.

Passenger numbers rose sharply from 14.7 million in 2008 to 51.7 million in 2009, but then declined annually until 2015, when the introduction of Pendolino trains and shorter journey times stabilised demand. The takeover of regional routes pushed the company into losses, a trend reversed only in 2016 while in February 2011 PKP Intercity secured a 10‑year state contract worth 4.5 billion zł for interregional services, covering 299 million train‑kilometres.
