Summary: The Bydgoszcz railway workshop, established in 1851 under Prussian rule, began as a small repair facility and rapidly expanded through the late 19th century, becoming one of the largest such sites in the region. After Poland regained independence (1918) and then Post-WWII, the workshop resumed operations as a major employer and industrial hub, significantly expanding its facilities and output, including repairs of thousands of steam locomotives. In the 1980s, it became a stronghold for the Solidarity nion movement. Following the fall of communism in 1989, the workshop was restructured into an independent enterprise, ZNTK Bydgoszcz, and later became Pesa Bydgoszcz in 2001. Pesa shifted focus from repairs to manufacturing modern rail vehicles, including trams, DMUs, and EMUs, for both domestic and international markets. Pesa today remains a major Polish rail manufacturer with a growing global presence.
