Avlo (Renfe) /1 – The brand’s evolution

Passenger train servicesMain line services / TicketingHigh speed RailSpainAvlo (Renfe)

Summary: An acronym for Alta Velocidad Low Cost, Avlo is one of those operators that presents itself as a company, when in reality it is a brand of Renfe. Avlo manages a Spanish low-cost high-speed train concept with the S-102 high-speed trainsets, but with a single-class layout and a bar removed. The Avlo is Renfe’s response to the recent arrival of SNCF and its low-cost TGV Ouigo. Since spring 2021 and the easing of health restrictions, SNCF’s Ouigo, AVE and Renfe’s Avlo have been competing on the Madrid-Barcelona route (photo). The first months of operation have been positive for both operators. By 2021, five trainsets will be configured as Avlo.

Summary

Avlo originated from the 2018 EVA concept, a low cost‑train proposal anticipating Spain’s rail‑market liberalisation in 2020. EVA aimed to offer Renfe’s most affordable and digital service, using biometric access, full online processes, personalised options and real‑time journey information. Although EVA never launched, its ideas shaped Avlo, unveiled in December 2019 with a purple S‑112 train.

The COVID‑19 emergency delayed its debut, but Renfe confirmed a new launch plan for June 2021. Avlo finally entered service on 23 June 2021 on the Madrid–Zaragoza–Barcelona–French border route, later expanding to Valencia (2022), Andalusia (2023) and Valladolid (2024). In 2024, S‑106 Avril trains joined the fleet, enabling expansion to Galicia and Asturias thanks to variable‑gauge technology, with services starting on 22 July 2024. On 8 September 2025, Avlo operations on the northeastern corridor were suspended after cracks were detected in the bogies of an S‑106 unit, with frequencies temporarily replaced by AVE services.
